In the space below are described, in general terms, the thematic areas in which Wiracocha Foundation intervenes emphatically its impetus, development and improvement; these issues, work and develop as a whole (synergy).
In Peru, family farming represents 97% of the total agricultural units of the total of 2.2 million agricultural units. Similarly, more than 83% of agricultural workers carry out family farming and it is the basis of food security for the population. Meanwhile, globally, family farming provides 70% of food and forms the basis of food security.
Peru is the possessor of a wide biological diversity, this is because thanks to the existence of multiple climates, atmospheric pressure, and fertile soils present in the three major regions of the country: the jungle (humid jungles, mangroves, yungas, etc.); the serranía (cordillera of Andes, Highlands); and the coast (beaches, ocean currents, valleys). These three regions are home to countless plant and animal species that is important to preserve.
Since immemorial times, the inhabitants of the ancient Peru were very aware of the great wealth that biodiversity (or mother earth) offered to them. It is for such reason that they came to cultivate and domesticate thousands of species and subspecies of plants as food. They came to obtain, from the mother earth, countless food, each with different and amazing qualities. That's why at Wiracocha Foundation we are committed to continue this ancient technology for the use of future generations.
For every edible plant species, there are countless subspecies. We put the potato as an example: this food has more than four thousand subspecies or varieties, among which there are potatoes with different properties in terms of climate or altitude for its optimal cultivation. The variety of species help decisively to other plant species to reproduce and maintain, as well as many animal species, where its persistence on the ecosystem depends on the correct functioning of the vital food chains.
Throughout its more than 7000 years of existence, the pre-Hispanic cultures developed a vast wisdom of their environment. This provided them with a vast knowledge of plant species in their habitat. Several studies have not been able to determine how it is that the pre-Columbian resident developed so extensive and accurate knowledge of its flora, allowing them to know how and which plants were the most indicated for use in natural medicine, nutrition for their infants and armies, etc.
The last and largest civilization of the ancient Peru: the Inca Empire, was in synthesis, a huge compendium of all knowledge of ancient cultures (Chavin, Nazca, Paracas, Chimu, etc.) This allowed the Incas develop an intelligent system of efficient of nutrition and a food security policy which today still surprises us. In Wiracocha Foundation we are committed to continue this policy of equality and sovereignty, and provide food security for vulnerable populations.
The process of formation of our today rich, diverse and exuberant culinary background, began over 7000 years ago with the emergence of the first pre-Hispanic cultures. Gastronomic culture that the civilization Caral-Supe began. They took the first step by starting with the domestication of plants for human consumption, a legacy that lasted until the formation of the Inca Empire, which adopted it and perfected it. After the Spanish conquest this practice was unfortunately truncated. However, today Wiracocha Foundation is committed to continue with this ancient legacy of incalculable value.
